What is a "walk-on" graduate?

If you were unable to attend your convocation when you applied to graduate, you can register as a "walk-on" and attend convocation within two years of when you graduated. This means crossing the stage wearing your academic regalia. You will attend the designated ceremony for your degree within the convocation season.

What you need to know as a walk-on

Find out how to register, get your diploma, and more.

Walk-ons will follow the same process as other graduates to register to attend convocation. It is important to review and complete all of the steps listed in the Convocation Preparation Checklist. Registration for Spring 2026 Convocation normally opens in May.

You will be able to log into the registration system to check if you are eligible to walk-on. You will also be able to see if we still have space for walk-ons in your approved ceremony.

There will be a limited number of walk-on spots for each ceremony and registration is required.

If you have not yet picked up your diploma, the Office of the Registrar will aim to bring your diploma to your approved convocation ceremony, but this is not guaranteed. Alternatively, you can find information on how to pick-up your diploma or have it mailed to you.

Walk-on graduates are in the graduate listing of when they graduated, not when they attend convocation.

For example, if you graduated in fall of 2025, but are attending the spring 2026 ceremony, your name will be in the Graduate Listing for the fall ceremonies.
